Holt County is located in North West Missouri. It is named for David Rice Holt, an early Missouri politician.
The seat is Oregon while the largest city is Mound City. The county is one of the most rural in Missouri.

It borders Atchison, Nodaway and Andrew Counties in Missouri; as well as Richardson and Nemaha Counties in Nebraska, and Doniphan and Brown Counties in Kansas.
Main highways through the county include I-29, US-59 and US-159.
